Muslim couple seen from behind facing a mosque skyline: how to find a Muslim rishta, a simple guide

Short answer: To find a suitable Muslim rishta, start with a clear and honest biodata, ask your relatives and community, and add a marriage bureau if you want help with screening and privacy. Involve the bride's Wali from the beginning, be careful with open WhatsApp groups and online profiles, and verify the basics before you decide. Submitting your biodata to HumNikah is free.

Finding a life partner for a son or daughter is one of the biggest responsibilities a family carries. Most families want the same things: a partner with good character, a similar way of life, a respectful family and a decision that both sides feel comfortable with. The difficult part is usually knowing where to begin.

A generation ago, relatives and elders in the neighbourhood arranged most rishtas. Today families live in different cities, work long hours and often do not know every suitable family personally. That is why many now combine the old way, through relatives and community, with newer options such as a marriage bureau. This guide explains each route simply, so you can search with confidence and without rushing.

Start with a clear biodata

Everything starts with a short, honest biodata. Until it is ready, another family cannot understand who you are or what you are looking for.

A good biodata is one page long and includes:

  • Personal details: name or initials, age, height and marital status (never married, divorced or widowed)
  • Education and work: your qualification, your job or business and the city you work in
  • Family background: parents' occupations, number of siblings and where the family lives
  • Expectations: a few respectful lines about education, values and location

Keep private details out at the start. Do not write ID numbers, bank details or your full home address. If you need help, read our guide on how to make a Muslim biodata or use our free Muslim biodata format for marriage.

Use your family and community

For many families, relatives and close friends remain the most trusted route. They know the family, they can speak about its reputation and the first conversation feels easier.

This route has clear advantages:

  • you already know something about the family's background
  • there are people who can speak for both sides
  • the first introduction is usually relaxed

It also has limits. Your circle may simply not include a family that fits your expectations, especially when you have specific preferences about education, profession or city. When that happens, widening the search is sensible and does not take anything away from your family network. Many families keep their relatives involved and add one more route.

Choose a marriage bureau carefully

A marriage bureau is a human go-between. Instead of searching alone, you share your biodata and expectations with a matchmaker who looks for suitable families and arranges introductions.

Before you share documents with any bureau, ask these questions:

  1. How are profiles screened? There should be a real process. At HumNikah, every profile is manually screened and we check identity and address documents. We do not run formal criminal-record checks.
  2. Who will see my biodata? It should go only to families you approve, never to public pages.
  3. Is the Wali involved? Introductions should go through the families, with the bride's Wali involved where her family wishes.
  4. What are the fees, in writing? You should be told clearly what you pay and when, and you should receive a receipt.
  5. Who is my contact person? You should know who handles your file.

Be careful with any bureau that promises a guaranteed match or a fixed date. Nobody can promise that. Our guides on how to choose a Muslim marriage bureau in Bangalore and bureau fees explain what to look for in more detail.

Stay safe online and on WhatsApp

Matrimonial websites, apps and WhatsApp groups can widen your search, but they need more care than a personal introduction.

  • Avoid open WhatsApp groups for biodatas. In an open group everyone can see your phone number, and a biodata or photograph can be saved and forwarded. Share a biodata directly with people you trust.
  • Let elders speak first. If a conversation starts online, let parents or guardians talk to each other before the young people do.
  • Never send money. No genuine rishta needs gift cards, "fees", tickets or bank transfers before the Nikah.
  • Do not share OTPs, passwords or card details with anyone connected to a rishta.
  • Be careful with photographs. Share them only once both families are serious.

Verify before you decide

Most rishtas are genuine, and checking the basics is a sensible habit, not an insult. Before you decide:

  • speak to the family, not only the candidate
  • see a government ID and proof of address
  • check education and work
  • ask more than one person about the family
  • ask openly about marital status and see the papers if there was an earlier marriage

Verification helps, but it has limits. Documents show facts, not character. Use our checklist to verify a Muslim rishta and add your own enquiries through people who know the family.

Involve the Wali and take your time

Introductions work best when families lead them. The bride's Wali and parents should be part of the conversation from the first step, which also protects the dignity of everyone involved.

Do not let anyone rush you. A genuine family will understand if you want to meet twice, speak to relatives and think carefully. Many families also pray and consult elders before deciding. If something feels wrong, pause and ask more questions. Our first rishta meeting checklist and the questions to ask before a Muslim marriage can help you prepare for those conversations.

FAQs

Is it free to submit my biodata to HumNikah?

Yes. Submitting your biodata to HumNikah is free. You can submit it on the website or message us on WhatsApp first.

Can parents search for a rishta on behalf of their son or daughter?

Yes, many families do. We encourage parents to involve their son or daughter in writing the biodata and in the decision, so that it reflects the person.

Is it safe to share a biodata on WhatsApp groups?

We suggest caution. Anyone in an open group can see your number and save or forward your biodata. It is safer to share it directly with people you trust or through a bureau that keeps it private.

How long does it take to find a rishta?

It depends on your expectations and on which families are looking at the same time, so we cannot promise a timeline or a match. A clear biodata and realistic expectations usually help.

Do I need to visit your office to start?

No. You can do the whole process by phone and WhatsApp. Visiting our Cox Town office is optional and by appointment.
